Bucs Deal With Injuries To Cornerback Room

Bucs' CB Bryce Hall Was Put Into An Aircast Before Leaving Sunday’s Game
Transcript

It was a week one match-up that left the Buccaneers defensive back room banged up following their 37-20 victory. A group that was already thin in depth, following the trade of longtime corner Carlton Davis, is now a glaring issue after multiple week one injuries.

Bucs’ cornerback Bryce Hall, a newcomer from the New York Jets and key depth piece for this defense, suffered a dislocated ankle and a fractured fibula. The same injury he suffered in college at Virginia, just in the opposite leg. Hall will miss the remainder of the season after signing a one-year deal with Tampa Bay.

Starting corner Zyon McCollum also couldn’t finish yesterday's game after he was diagnosed with a concussion on a loud collision. His status will be heavily monitored going into this week as the Bucs’ don’t have any DB’s with NFL experience from the outside corner position. Normally lining up as the slot corner, Christian Izien stepped up big in his role to take McCollum’s role and didn’t give up any major plays.

If McCollum isn’t okay to go in week two, it should be expected that Izien will once again be elevated to CB2, while rookie Tykee Smith would step up into the starting slot position. Other Bucs’ that could step into the starting role is the undrafted rookie Tyrek Funderburk, who missed time in training camp with a foot injury, or DB Tavierre Thomas.

The corners will be a position to be picked on against a very solid Detroit Lions offense in week two. Amon-Ra St. Brown and their WR corps are good, paired up with Jared Goff’s on-time accuracy will be quite the test for a Bucs defense that is already stacking injuries. Zyon McCollum’s health will be the key to this mystery, hopefully the newly-appointed starter is good to go and on top of his game for the week two match-up in Detroit.
