The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their roster set for the 2024 NFL season - or at least set until something inevitably happens and they change it. But for now, it’s set. In a somewhat surprising move, they are keeping just five wide receivers despite the impressive performances of Cody Thompson and Ryan Miller during training camp and the preseason as well as the signing of Sterling Shepard thanks in large part to the persistence of Baker Mayfield.
Here is the roster the Bucs will begin the season with;
QB: Baker Mayfield, Kyle Trask
RB: Rachaad White, Bucky Irving, Sean Tucker
WR: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer, Kameron Johnson
TE: Cade Otton, Payne Durham, Ko Keift, Devin Culp
OL: Tristan Wirfs, Ben Bredeson, Graham Barton, Cody Mauch, Luke Goedeke, Robert Hainsey, Justin Skule, Brandon Walton, Elijah Klein
DL: Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey, Logan Hall, Greg Gaines, William Gholston, Earnest Brown
OLB: Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Chris Braswell, Anthony Nelson, Markees Watts, Jose Ramirez
ILB: Lavonte David, K.J. Britt, J.J. Russell, SirVocea Dennis
DB: Jamel Dean, Zyon McCollum, Tykee Smith, Bryce Hall, Tavierre Thomas, Tyrek Funderburk, Josh Hayes, Antoine Winfield Jr., Jordan Whitehead, Kaevon Merriweather
Kicker: Chase McLaughlin
Punter: Jake Camarda
Long Snapper: Evan Deckers
Versatility reigns supreme as some of the harder keep/cut decisions boiled down to special teams where a lot of the defensive backs bring value. Todd Bowles loves having those players that can bounce from corner to slot to safety and still be utilized as gunners and on the kickoff team. Things like that opened the door for players like Tyrek Funderburk and Josh Hayes to make the team over a Cody Thompson or C.J. Brewer.
Hard decisions had to be made and the Bucs had to let players go that showed a lot of promise and had a lot of talent. That alone speaks volumes to the type of team the Buccaneers have heading into 2024.
UPDATE: Following the announcement of the 53-man roster, the Buccaneers released Brandon Walton after being awarded a waiver claim of offensive lineman Royce Newman. Newman, a former fourth round pick of the Green Bay Packers, has appeared in 51 games and made 24 starts over the course of his three year career.
