The 2024 NFC South Race May Be More Exciting Than Expected

Tampa Bay & New Orleans Lead The South After Two Weeks
Transcript

Two weeks into this new NFL season and there are a couple of undefeated teams remaining in the NFC South. After many experts picked the Atlanta Falcons to win the division in 2024, it ends up being the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints that have started the season 2-0.

After a hard-fought win in Detroit, the Bucs are gaining respect throughout the national media. Many didn’t think Tampa Bay could defeat a tough Lions team that beat the Bucs twice just a season ago. It marks the fourth straight season that the Bucs have started 2-0, a feat not many teams are able to say they’ve accomplished.

It may be a shock to fans who may not watch the Bucs every week, but they have been a force for quite some time and it seems as if we’re all seeing it come together with quarterback Baker Mayfield. He seems confident with his awesome offensive weapons and protection, plus this Todd Bowles defense seems to be hitting on all cylinders early in 2024.

For New Orleans, they convincingly start their season 2-0 by leading the league in points scored with 91. Many called it a fluke when the Saints put up a 47-10 rout of the Carolina Panthers, a team who was expected to struggle in 2024. But Sunday when New Orleans did it again, traveling into Dallas and beating the Cowboys 44-19, it became tough to deny that their offense is potent.

This is a statement sent from this New Orleans offense that says they are serious. The team hired Klint Kubiak this offseason to be their offensive coordinator and it seems as if he’s fitting in well, propelling this offense to league-high stats early on. Quarterback Derrick Carr and running back Alvin Kamara are off to great starts and building confidence to kick off the season.

Not to be forgotten, the Atlanta Falcons comeback in Philadelphia on Monday Night Football to beat the Eagles and sneak out with a win 22-21 to avoid an 0-2 start in the Kirk Cousins era. Still not looking 100% from an achilles injury, Cousins drove his team down the field in a two-minute scenario down six.

Although they haven’t looked the most intimidating to start the season, Atlanta still did what it took to leave with a win in an underwhelming performance. Who’s to say what this team is capable of when they’ve smoothed out their bumps?

Unfortunately for Carolina, their first two weeks were painful to watch. Former Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator Dave Canales is now the Panthers head coach and has taken two tough losses already. It’s not good practice to rule teams out of playoff contention this early in the season, but after benching second-year quarterback Bryce Young, this team is in panic mode entering only the third week of 2024.
