Todd Bowles Gives Positive Update On Vita Vea Injury

Bucs DL Vita Vea Diagnosed With A Grade-Two MCL Sprain
Transcript

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are battling injury as a result of their 20-16 week two victory in Detroit. This team came into the game with many injuries already, but none other than DT Vita Vea left the game shortly after halftime with a knee injury.

Initial reactions were all over the place, as the Buccaneers’ main run-stuffer looked as if his injury was going to keep him for an extended amount of time. He could be seen leaving the field and going to the locker room shortly after the second half began.

It was during his Monday press conference, when Bucs’ head coach Todd Bowles gave a greatly positive update, and brought hope to fans throughout the bay. He said that Vita Vea suffered a grade-two MCL sprain and WON’T even be ruled out for this Sunday’s game against Denver.

This is huge news considering that the Bucs’ defense has been missing the presence of Calijah Kancey, another big piece to the interior of their defensive line. So now that Vea is considered day-to-day, it is still a possibility we see both Calijah Kancey and Vita playing for the first time this season. That’s being optimistic, as both injuries are serious and this Buccaneer coaching staff tends to play it safe when it comes to early-season injuries.

The Bucs relied on their depth throughout the defense, but in relief of Vea came Greg Gaines, a defensive tackle who Todd Bowles relied on last year. But not in this capacity.

Gaines, who's used to playing twenty to 25 plays a game, stepped up big in Vita’s absence. Playing  66  total plays in Detroit! A ridiculous amount. He doesn’t credit himself for this win though. Gaines spoke to media about Todd Bowles game plan being the reason this defense prevailed:

It was a great victory with a defense that was bending, not breaking. It was a Todd Bowles masterclass game called on the defensive-side of the ball, and gives fans confidence moving forward.

We will find out more about Vita Vea’s injury on Wednesday, as well as Calijah Kancey, Antoine Winfield Jr., and a handful of key Buccaneers’ players attempting their return. The 1pm kickoff Sunday against Denver will surely be hot. This Buccaneers’ defensive line will need their depth active and ready to go!
