What To Expect From The Buccaneers In Week One vs Washington

What to expect from the Bucs in their first game at Raymond James?
Transcript

The first week of the 104th NFL season is upon us and your Tampa Bay Buccaneers open it up at home against the Washington Commanders. This 2024 Bucs squad resembles a lot of last year’s team who put up a tough battle in their Divisional round playoff game in Detroit. Leaders such as Baker Mayfield and Antoine Winfield Jr. always play with a chip on their shoulder, but for a lot of the players who missed out on the 2020 Super Bowl victory, being overlooked after being so close will only motivate them to push harder.

This Game Should Be Won In The Trenches

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is known for his dynamic blitz packages. With rookie QB Jayden Daniels making his NFL debut on Sunday, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see the 2nd-overall pick feeling pressure early and often. Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey will be given plenty of attention from Commanders offensive-lineman, which should open up opportunities for blitzing linebackers and DB’s to get an early season sack.

On the flip side, the Buccaneers finished last in yards per carry during 2023. Under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, that shouldn’t be the case. But in this week one match-up, the Commanders defense is looking to hold their own and dominate the point-of-attack. With the additions of LB’s Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu, this defense has the expectation to hit the ground running and shut down this Tampa Bay offense.

If It Comes Down To It, Chemistry Will Prevail

Tampa Bay should be able to make plays and do enough to control their own destiny in the fourth quarter. But if it comes down to the final drive, the experience of both Tampa Bay’s defensive stars and Baker Mayfield’s connection with Mike Evans will be enough to overcome the first game of the Dan Quinn regime in Washington.

All eyes will be on Jayden Daniels, after his exciting collegiate career at LSU. There will undoubtedly be a few solid rushing plays by the rookie in his debut. But don’t buy into the “Buccaneers lose against rookie QBs myth”, since Todd Bowles came to town and defensive coordinator, the Bucs are 10-5 against starting rookie quarterbacks.
