The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were set on a mission Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles came into a very hot Raymond James Stadium. In a game that was expected to at least be a hard-fought, close game, the Bucs dominated Philly and the defense stood out. With solid tackling and their control of the line, the Tampa Bay defense held the Eagles to 227 yards and totaled six sacks.
It was an outstanding performance by the entire defense, but it was Lavonte David who stuck out from the very beginning of the game. With eight sacks, two sacks and a forced fumble, David shows that he is still one of the best linebackers in football in his thirteenth season. Not only on the stat sheet, he was causing disruption on passing downs, stuffing running holes and taking up double-teams all day.
With the first tackle he recorded in Sunday’s game, it pushed him to 1,500 career tackles, joining Derrick Brooks as the only other player to reach that feat in a Buccaneers uniform. That amount of tackles is extraordinary and shows the amount of dedication David has put in up to this point. He is currently twelfth all-time in tackles and in his 33-year old season, has time to push himself higher on the leaderboards.
After having his presence felt throughout the first half, in the third quarter Lavonte got in the backfield and caused a forced fumble for the second week in a row:
In a play that essentially put the dagger into Philadelphia, the Bucs showed their overall dominance and what they’re able to do when Vita Vea is present in the middle of the defensive line. Although the Eagles were without their two star receivers, they bottled up Saquon Barkley for the most part, especially if you don’t count his 59-yard run directly out of halftime.
If anyone is used to quick turnarounds, it’s Lavonte David. He will quickly prepare his group for a Thursday Night match-up in Atlanta. One that can be reminiscent of the 2014 game, when the Bucs traveled to Atlanta on Thursday and lost 56-14. We’ll see how this Buccaneers’ team will prepare for such an important, early season match-up.
