After one of the ugliest second quarters of football you’ll ever see, the Buccaneers rallied to dominate the New Orleans Saints hanging a 50-burger on them in the SuperDome 51-27.
After taking total control in the first quarter thanks to a Chris Godwin touchdown catch then an Antoine Winfield Jr. scoop and score, the Bucs fell apart in the second quarter to see their 17-0 lead turn into a 27-24 deficit by halftime. A punt return for a touchdown by Shaheed, a touchdown pass from Spencer Rattler to Bub Means, an Alvin Kamara rushing touchdown, and a couple of field goals put the Saints in control.
Baker Mayfield started off hot, completing his first nine passes but went ice cold in a hurry, completing one of this next eight and turning the ball over three times in the second quarter.
In the second half, however, the defense got back on track and the offense fed off of it. The defense allowed just 96 yards in the second half with 48 of those coming on the Saints’ final drive. Two interceptions by Rattler, three sacks by the defense, and a smothering pass rush led to the Bucs being able to take control back.
The offense fed off of it, no one more than Sean Tucker who was incredible in place of Rachaad White. The Bucs, as a team, finished with 277 rushing yards with 136 coming from Sean Tucker on 14 carries. Both Tucker and Bucky Irving had runs of over 30 yards while Tucker also added 56 receiving yards to Irving’s 24. The two backs combined for three touchdowns in the game.
Chris Godwin was the other shining star in this one, finishing with 11 receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns of his own - the most impactful coming on a quick dump off that should have been stopped for a two-to-three yard gain and instead went 55 yards to the end zone. That play got the Bucs back in front 31-27 and they never looked back.
A big storyline out of this one is going to be the huge amount of penalties. The Bucs came into this game as the least penalized team in the league and ended up with twelve penalty calls costing them 86 yards compared to the Saints’ seven penalties for 70 yards. There were also some costly missed calls like the clear running into the kicker when Jake Camarda was taken to the ground as well as numerous missed holds that cost Yaya Diaby and Tykee Smith sacks.
The Bucs’ 594 yards of offense are the most in franchise history and their 277 rushing yards are the second most by a team this season. Their 51 points were the second most the Bucs have ever scored in a game. This also marked the eighth time in franchise history a player had 10+ receptions, 100+ yards, and 2+ touchdowns in a game - Godwin’s second time reaching that feat and the first time for the Bucs since Mike Evans’ hat trick performance against the Panthers in 2022.
