The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed wide receiver Sterling Shepard to the active roster after the veteran suited up in both week three and four, per NFL Networks Mike Garafolo. He caught three passes for 51 yards against the Eagles and has shown he’s still got what it takes to produce on the NFL level.
After a productive career as a New York Giant that was impressive, yet riddled by injury, Shepard finds a home in Tampa Bay with former collegiate teammate, Baker Mayfield. It was noted during training camp that Shepard had considered retirement until a phone call from Mayfield ultimately convinced him to give it another run, but this time in Tampa Bay.
Prior to the start of the season, Shepard was left off the initial 53-man roster, as the Bucs only carried an unusual five receivers into the regular season, but added a few veterans to their practice squad. It only took but two games for one of the five receivers to end up on the injury report and during the Bucs week three match-up against Denver, did Sterling Shepard finally get called up to the active roster.
It was the same scenario during week four’s game against Philadelphia, Jalen McMillan injured his hamstring on the final day of practice before Sunday’s game and Shepard’s talent was utilized once again. This time seeing plenty of offensive snaps once Trey Palmer left with a concussion, Shepard caught three of his five targets, totaling 51 yards.
He looked impressive in his opportunity also, quick and shifty route running, paired with the solid hands fans have come to expect from Shepard in his time as a Giant. Time will tell if he will fully overtake rookie Jalen McMillan’s role as third receiver in this offense, but the depth chart still has McMillan slotted in as Tampa Bay’s WR3.
Bucs’ fans should be pumped to have such a talented receiver in the depths of their wide receiver corps. We know he will need to stay healthy throughout the season, but if he does and continues to look how he did on Sunday, Tampa Bay’s offense will have a lot of production from a receiver that many folks had written off.
Tampa Bay has waived DL Ben Stille in a corresponding move.
