Antoine Winfield Jr. Expected to Miss Multiple Games with Knee Injury

Bucs star safety continues to deal with injuries in 2024
Transcript

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is expected to miss multiple weeks with a knee strain, the team’s head coach Todd Bowles announced Monday. The Bucs secured sole possession of first place in the NFC South after Sunday’s win and will now be without their star defender for at least a couple of these final four games.

The injury occurred in the beginning of the second quarter, when teammate Zyon McCollum was in pursuit of a tackle, but ended up colliding with Winfield below his knees. Winfield was initially ruled as questionable to return to the game, but is now ruled out for the next few weeks.

Although it’s better than a season-ending tear, one of the Buccaneers defensive captains will be missed as this team gears up for their playoff push. The recent additions of Mike Edwards, Kaevon Merriweather and Ryan Neal to this Tampa Bay secondary will seemingly pay dividends, considering how quickly they’ll be needed and the fact they’re aware of the complex defense they’ll be trusted to be a part of.

We’ll see how Todd Bowles will make adjustments moving forward. Rookie Tykee Smith will surely need to continue to make his impact felt in whatever role he’s given, as he’s capable of many. Plus, we should expect to see an increase in snaps from safety Kaevon Merriweather, who stepped in for the injured Winfield on Sunday and made his presence felt with a sack and an interception which was overturned after review.

Since Antoine Winfield Jr. has been ruled out for what Todd Bowles considered “a little while”, we can expect to hear an update about his injury next Wednesday as the team’s next practice week begins.
