Rapid Reaction: Bucky, Evans Shine in Huge Bucs Win

Tampa Bay’s offense was able to gain 500 yards for the second time this season
Transcript

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traveled to Los Angeles and routed the Chargers 40-17. Mike Evans had a field day against the LA secondary, posting 159 yards and two explosive touchdowns. As a whole, the offense erupted for over 500 total yards and executed both through the air and on the ground.

Baker Mayfield had quite the fantastic outing at SoFi Stadium, leading the Bucs offense to their second 500-yard outburst in 2024. He posted 288 passing yards, with 22 completions out of 27 attempts, and although he threw a timely interception in the second quarter, Mayfield bounced back and finished the day with four passing touchdowns.

The Bucs offensive outbreak couldn’t have been possible without rookie running back Bucky Irving. He had another 100-yard game to add to his impressive rookie campaign, highlighted by a 54-yard, game-changing run in the third quarter. The Bucs rookie back continues to showcase unbelievable agility every week, something we haven’t seen in the Tampa Bay backfield in quite some time.

On the defensive side of things, Todd Bowles had his guys dialed up and ready to go for Harbaugh’s Charger offense. They didn’t dominate every quarter, but in the second half they seemed as if they are preparing for yet another solid December, something that’s become a normality for this Bucs’ defense since Todd Bowles took over this defense in 2019.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert came in already banged up to Sunday’s game, and the Bucs got to him early and often. The team totaled only three sacks, with both Lavonte David and Logan Hall recording a sack and a half, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story as to how often Herbert was hit and hurried by the Buccaneer pash rush.

Tampa Bay’s defense racked up ten quarterback hurries, along with an interception and a fumble recovery. Their pass defense was top notch as a whole, and the same can be said for their rush defense, only allowing 32 rushing yards on the day. Lavonte David was flying all around the line of scrimmage, captaining this defense with some of the best football we’ve seen out of him this season.

This is the type of defensive performance that can be a turning point in the season, as Tampa Bay aims to make a playoff run in January. With injuries to key players, coach Bowles had his guys ready to go in a tough west coast match-up and it is inspiring considering how the Bucs defenses have gelled together and improved each of these past few seasons, and the same seems to be the case in 2024 as well.

The Buccaneers will gear up for their final road game of the season, as they will travel to Dallas to play the Cowboys this upcoming week. They will be favored in next week’s game, and the same can be assumed about their final two games, at home against division foes New Orleans and Carolina to end the regular season.

All signs point to the Bucs winning the NFC South for the fourth consecutive season with three weeks remaining. Will they be able to continue their win streak to end the season? It will be interesting to see how the 2024 Tampa Bay Buccaneers end this season and contend in the postseason if they were to make it.
