The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been satisfied with their new hire at offensive coordinator so far in 2024. Liam Coen has Baker Mayfield and his offense firing at 24 points per game through four games this season. A fluent passing game paired with a creative rushing attack has gotten the Bucs down the field and into the end zone with consistency.
They travel up to Atlanta in week five in a Thursday Night game that will have a national audience. A game many NFL fans are looking forward to, as the majority of fans had the Falcons winning the NFC South before the season started. In a short turnaround, these Bucs will have to set the tone early in a hostile environment.
Coen will surely have a gameplan dialed up for this Atlanta Falcons defense that is constructed by new head coach Raheem Morris. The two coaches were the offensive and defensive coordinators of the Los Angeles Rams during the 2022 season, to say they’re familiar with each other is an understatement. They will now face off against each other as divisional rivals on prime time.
“That’s definitely a challenge.” Coen admitted. “I’m sure a lot of our calls are very similar, a lot of maybe the no huddle and verbiage but it’s hard because you look at them defensively [and] you can definitely see a Rams flavor, but Jimmy Lake has put his own twist and turn on that defense. They’re doing some really good things, [and] they’ve got some really good players, especially at the safety position and up front – they’ve definitely improved up front as well. It’s going to be a little bit of a chess match I’m sure but at the end of the day, if we can try to control the line of scrimmage and play the game on their side of the line of scrimmage and play the way we played last week, good things will happen. That’s all we really care about is if we come out with the competitive nature, the toughness, the physicality and just [go] out and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played, the result is the result.”
The mentality is simple. The defense can know what this offense is trying to do, and they still expect to execute. If Tampa Bay continues to improve controlling the line of scrimmage as they did against a tough Eagles’ front, this team will continue to have high-scoring performances.
It was a short week of preparation and a lot of recovery for this Tampa Bay team. Surely Liam Coen has a solid idea of what he’d like to do against his former running mate Morris, but these two teams will face off again three weeks up the road in Tampa.
How much will Coen and this Bucs’ offense dive into their bag of tricks, knowing you will see this divisional opponent so soon? Both Tampa Bay and Atlanta fans can only hope these coaches have extended tenures with their teams and it could prove to be an anticipated matchup we see for years to come.
