Buccaneers Lose To Chiefs In Overtime, Fall To 4-5

For the second time this season, the Bucs lost in overtime without ever touching the ball
Transcript

On a rainy field in Kansas City, the Buccaneers battled with the Chiefs in a game most didn’t expect to be very competitive. Apparently, the defense didn’t get the memo. After a third down sack by Vita Vea to kill the Chiefs’ opening drive, the Bucs’ offense didn’t get much going. Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to tack on a Harrison Butker field goal to go up 3-0.

On the ensuing possession, the Bucs were all about Cade Otton and Bucky Irving - and a jet sweep for Sterling Shepard - before the hometown kid Rachaad White got into the end zone to give the Bucs a 7-0 lead.

A rare mistake from Antoine Winfield Jr., however, proved costly. After Mahomes was sacked for the second time by Vita Vea, he aired it out into triple coverage to DeAndre Hopkins. Winfield was in perfect position to intercept the pass but instead of making a play for the ball, he waited for it to come to him - which was a huge mistake. Hopkins made the catch to set up 1st-and-goal for KC. Three plays later, he found Hopkins again to take the lead back.

The Bucs went 3-and-out, giving the ball back to the Chiefs with just under two minutes to play and all three of their timeouts. On 2nd-and-10, Mahomes found Kelce, but a perfectly timed hit by Tykee Smith - who returned from a concussion - forced a fumble and the Bucs took over. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to do anything with the free possession and went into half trailing 10-7.

Bucky Irving sparked the offense to start the second half with a 46-yard kickoff return, setting the Bucs up at their own 49. Sean Tucker finally got involved, getting the ball on the first three plays of the drive. A big time catch and run by Rakim Jarrett, breaking multiple tackles, set up a Cade Otton touchdown - his fourth in the last three games - for a 14-10 Bucs lead.

Mahomes was under duress again on the Chiefs’ next possession, being forced to throw it away on first down then being sacked for the second time by Calijah Kancey on third down to force the 3-and-out.

Another promising drive by the Bucs offense was stalled thanks to a terrible call against Tristan Wirfs. On 1st-and-10, Bucky Irving picked up eight yards to get to the Kansas City 20 yard line - but Wirfs was called for a facemask, moving the Bucs to the 43 and facing 1st-and-25. Replay showed Wirfs never touched the facemask, but the call killed the Bucs’ drive, forcing them to settle for a field goal and a 17-10 lead.

Kareem Hunt led the charge on the Chiefs’ ensuing drive, but it was Mahomes that was able to get the touchdown pass to Samaje Perine. Mahomes broke contain, leaving Lavonte David in no-man’s land, but as Mahomes planted to throw he suffered a left leg injury and had to be helped off the field. He suffered an ankle injury on the play, but was able to return.

A pass from Mayfield to Otton was too tall on second down in the pouring rain and a scramble by Mayfield on third down isn’t enough to move the sticks, so the Bucs’ offense was unable to respond and have a quick three-and-out.

The Bucs’ defense, which had played extremely well up to this point, couldn’t find an answer. A converted fourth down, Mahomes 2-for-2 on third downs - taking him to 10/10 on the game - and a second touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins who abused Josh Hayes all night long gave Kansas City a 24-17 lead with just over four minutes left in the game.

The offense had no answer with Baker being sacked on second down then incomplete to Ryan Miller on third down, the Tampa possession lasted just 1:28 before they had to punt it away in hopes the defense could get a stop and get the ball back.

Two runs and an incomplete pass - Mahomes’ only incomplete pass on third down in the game - got the Bucs the ball back with 2:16 left at their own 30, setting the stage for Baker Mayfield and the offense to tie the game.

The drive started off with a holding call on Bredeson to start things with 1st-and-20. Baker was able to find Trey Palmer for a gain of fourteen yards before the two-minute warning. Some incredible catches by Sterling Shepard and some big time blocks from Rachaad White, the Bucs got to the 1-yard line with 33 seconds left. Two plays later, Baker found Ryan Miller for the touchdown. Bowles opted to kick the extra point and tie rather than go for the win, which proved to be costly.

In overtime, it was the same as the Falcons game. The Chiefs won the toss and the Bucs’ offense never got a chance. With a couple of key passes to Travis Kelce, the Chiefs got to the one yard line before Kareem Hunt punched it in to give the Chiefs the 30-24 victory. The Bucs fall to 4-5 on the season after starting 3-1 and now face the 49ers next week.
