The Buccaneers were active making move on their injured reserve on Monday, as they added cornerback Jamel Dean and wide receiver Kameron Johnson to their IR. Both Dean and Johnson will both miss a minimum of four games, with tonight’s game counting as their first. The team also activated defensive lineman Earnest Brown from injured reserve and punter Trenton Gill from the practice squad.
Dean’s hamstring injury he suffered last week will open up a huge void in this secondary, as he’s been the team’s number one corner since the beginning of training camp. Zyon McCollum was introduced to a starting role for the first time in his young career at the beginning of the season. With Dean going down, McCollum will now overtake the team’s lead cornerback, lining up against opposing team’s top receivers, week in and week out.
Since McCollum’s role has increased, Tyrek Funderburk, an undrafted rookie who started the season as a Tampa Bay depth piece, will now have a chance to showcase his ability at the NFL level. Funderburk played the majority of snaps in New Orleans after Dean went down. Now moving forward, it seems like his role is set as outside cornerback until Dean is able to return.
For rookie Kameron Johnson, there were high hopes he would be a contributor in 2024. But since the very beginning of the season, Johnson has dealt with an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined. He looked to be a key contributor in the special teams department, and with him being the fifth receiver on the depth chart, all signs pointed to Tampa Bay having him within the plans of the offense. We will keep updated with his status as the season progresses.
Tampa Bay also activated defensive lineman Earnest Brown IV from the injured reserved, meaning he will be eligible to play tonight. Brown was added to IR for an injury to his ribs before the start of the season and has missed the necessary four games.
Buccaneers punter Trenton Gill will also be eligible to play tonight as he’s been activated from the practice squad for a third game this season. According to NFL rules, practice squad players are allowed to be elevated from the practice squad to active roster three times during the regular season and an unlimited amount of times in the postseason. In Gill’s case, this would be his final game being eligible to be called up from the practice squad, meaning the Bucs would have to sign Gill to the active roster.
All signs point to Bucs punter Jake Camarda being a healthy inactive for week seven.
