Baker Mayfield’s history of rising to the occasion dates back to his first college game in Lubbock, Texas, as the Oklahoma Sooners took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Mayfield led the Sooners to a 66-59 win over a Patrick Mahomes-led Texas Tech team. The 2016 competition is the highest-scoring game in NCAA FBS history.
As the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and the appointed franchise quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield has had plenty of battles against some of the toughest teams in the AFC North.
The Baltimore Ravens historically got the best of him during Mayfield’s stint in Cleveland. Years later, as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he now looks to put the past behind him as he takes on the Ravens for a Week 7 matchup.
On Thursday as the players returned for their first practice before the Monday Night Football matchup, Mayfield took to the podium and answered questions about facing off against the Ravens and what to expect going into this matchup.
“They kind of have tone setters on all three levels,” Mayfield said. “Just knowing the type of guys that they have. They’re physical, they want to be the bully, but they have those guys that set the tone for them on all three levels. Every single position group presents its own challenges and so, yeah we’re playing the Ravens, they’re a physical team but it comes down to us executing, running our things, and doing it at a high level.”
The Buccaneers are looking to add to a solid start in the season and improve to 5-2 as they take on the Ravens at home in Tampa Bay on Monday Night. For Mayfield, this could be the high-stakes game that propels him to another level the league hasn’t seen before.
