Is Baker Mayfield Making An MVP Case?

The amazing season the Bucs' QB has started off with warrants a serious discussion
Transcript

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have NEVER had a player awarded MVP while on their team. Even with Tom Brady’s magical run a few seasons ago and all of the defensive legends they’ve had, it’s a feat that has yet to be overcome.

Through six weeks of the 2024 NFL season, the man this Bucs’ organization took a shot on to be their quarterback is making a solid case to take home the league’s highest honor. Baker Mayfield has this Tampa Bay offense firing on all cylinders, with new offensive coordinator Liam Coen calling the shots. Sitting with a 4-2 record, Mayfield and company have a chance to put themselves into the history books after their exciting start.

Offensive production has come at a high rate and this team is growing accustomed to frequent success in the passing game. With receivers like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, there’s no surprise the Bucs offense has become pass-heavy. But thus far, Baker Mayfield has amassed 1489 passing yards, along with a league-leading fifteen passing touchdowns & the second-ranked passer rating in the NFL at 109.4.

At his current rate, Mayfield would end with 4,219 total passing yards in 2024, along with 42 passing touchdowns. These are MVP level numbers and it’s tough to deny, especially if he’s able to maintain his 109 passer rating & continue to run the ball with the success he’s had. With the emergence of the run game these past couple weeks, it should only open up passing lanes and leave more receivers open for continued success through the air.

Mayfield hasn't only put up great numbers, but has consistently made game-winning plays, escaped from sacks in the most unlikely circumstances and lights this Tampa Bay team up with energy when they need it most. Baker Mayfield is also showing how consistent he really can be, an issue that has followed the QB throughout his career. Aside from blunders against Denver and a couple minute stretch Sunday in New Orleans, the Bucs have had solid, productive play from their signal caller.

So what needs to continue to happen in these next eleven weeks for Mayfield to prevail as the NFL’s MVP Award? It isn’t going to be easy.

Baker Mayfield and the Bucs respectively don’t get the national media coverage they deserve, and you don’t have to pay attention to the NFL very long to understand they want their household-name superstars taking home the league’s highest honors. With Patrick Mahomes leading a 5-0 Kansas City team and Lamar Jackson starting where he left off in 2023, Mayfield will continue to have to put up high numbers and win games to boost his MVP-case.

The health of his surrounding pieces will also play a huge part in how much impact Mayfield continues to make. So far under their new OC Liam Coen, this offense has found success through different avenues and a plethora of players. It’s such a key factor that Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Tristan Wirfs are all able to avoid injury and stay on the field, as this team puts their best effort to get Baker Mayfield the first MVP Award in Buccaneers’ history.
