Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Kansas City Chiefs: Week 9 Preview

The Bucs and Chiefs are set to collide on Monday Night
Transcript

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fallen to 4-4 after a 3-1 start and are staring a third straight loss in the face as they head to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. Injuries and mistakes have played a huge part in their recent snide, but this team is still competitive and not giving up on the season.

They have an offense that ranks top five in total offense, passing yards per game, and points per game while their rushing offense is in the top ten. The problem is their defense ranking in the bottom five in total defense, passing yards allowed per game, and points allowed per game while being uncharacteristically low - nineteenth - in rushing yards allowed per game.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, have one of the league’s best defenses - top five in total defense, rushing yards per game allowed, and points per game allowed. The defense has been what this Chiefs team has been able to hang its hat on for the last two seasons and that shows no signs of slowing.

Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield are currently tied atop the NFL in interceptions with nine, but Mayfield is also the league leader in touchdowns with 21 while Mahomes has just eight - tied with Derek Carr, Geno Smith, Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts, and Bo Nix. It has been a very un-Mahomes like season, but the Chiefs as a whole are still getting the job done.

This is the second meeting between these two teams since Super Bowl LV - which is the only loss the Chiefs have against the Bucs in the Mahomes era. The Chiefs have taken two of the last three dating back to 2020, but the Bucs lead the all-time series 8-7 and they won five straight from 1999-2016.

Prime time hasn’t been kind to the Bucs over the last few years. They’re 0-2 this season in prime time games and this is their second Monday night game in three weeks. It’s certainly going to be an issue playing without Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, but Jalen McMillan is now dealing with a hamstring injury - which kept him out for two weeks earlier this year. The Bucs are going to have to lean heavily on the running backs in this one to not just control the clock, but in the passing game as well.

The Chiefs’ last loss at home came on Christmas Day last year when they lost to the Ravens while the Bucs’ last win in Arrowhead came in November of 2016.

The Buccaneers are 9-point underdogs with an over/under of 46. Mahomes has thrown an interception in eight straight games while Kareem Hunt has scored the team’s first touchdown each of the last three weeks.
