The 813’s Staff Predictions (Week 2): Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Detroit Lions

Our team gives their predictions for Tampa Bay's week two matchup with Detroit
Transcript

Week two in the NFL will feature a 2023 NFC divisional round playoff match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions on its 1pm slate on Sunday. There are many changes on both sides, but also many similarities.

The Bucs are struck by injury already, with none other than Antoine Winfield Jr. missing the next three to four games. We will see how Todd Bowles makes adjustments for a Jared Goff-led offense that has recently gotten the best of him.

Take a dive into the predictions of some of The 813’s staff members and how they think it will play out:

JC Cornell (@CornellNFL)

Bucs win in a shootout with the Lions in Detroit. Baker Mayfield, Rachaad White, Bucky Irving, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan prove to be too much to handle with Liam Coen calling the plays. Huge upset in motor city, at least in the eyes of the national media.

The Buccaneers offense continues it's efficiency even down their starting Right Tackle, Goedeke, as Chris Godwin and Mike Evans take advantage of a Man-Cover heavy Lions defense and Liam Coen's mismatch concepts. Rachaad White picks up where he left off in January in Detroit proving to be a major factor out of the backfield. The Bucs defense is able to slow the Lions down thanks to a timely turnover or two as the Secondary surprises, and the Bucs shock the Lions.

Not having Calijah Kancey is a big problem. It puts too much pressure on Vita Vea. Plus, Logan Hall is just coming back from injury. I predict Rachaad White, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin will score, but it’s not enough

Lions 27 - Bucs 24

The cats come in overconfident and get ravaged by a wounded Bucs team. Detroit falls back to earth and Baker and the Bucs put the world on notice.

The Bucs might be the most beat up team in the NFL already and things don't seem to be getting better any time soon. Not having Antoine Winfield Jr, Calijah Kancey, and Luke Goedeke in this game really hurts. The Lions' offense can put up 30 points in a hurry against healthy offenses, let alone one missing one of their top pass rushers and the best safety in the NFL.

Godwin is going to be a focal point again and he'll finish with over 100 yards and a score while the Bucs win the turnover battle, but it won't be enough to get the upset in Detroit.

Lions 34 - Bucs 30

Maura Carey (@mauracareyNFL)

Tampa Bay returns to the scene of the crime and pulls off the upset. The Buccaneers’ offense will have to adjust without offensive tackle Luke Geodeke, but the real challenge comes defensively with do-it-all safety Antoine Winfield Jr. sidelined. It’s a big day for the guys up front who are responsible for stopping Detroit’s talented running back tandem, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. With a Divisional Round exit still fresh on his mind and chip on his shoulder, Baker Mayfield’s hot start continues in Week 2. The Bucs want it more and make a statement with a 24-21 victory.

Bucs 24 - Lions 21

Injuries strike the Buccaneers early in the season, especially on defense. The Lions are coming off a 2023 season where they went 2-0 against the Bucs. I believe Todd Bowles & Baker Mayfield had this game circled and have a plan put together for their respective sides of the ball. Although there’s no replacing Antoine Winfield Jr., this defense will have a plan to suppress both Goff through the air and their dynamic running game. The Bucs will force a highlight touchdown to Mike Evans over Carlton Davis, but it will overall be a Chris Godwin game where he catches 10+ balls with over 100 yards. A game that isn’t over until the end, Tampa Bay prevails with a Chase McLaughlin walk-off.

Bucs 30 - Lions 27

The Buccaneers run game seems to have improved in just one showing. Outside zone runs were massively successful while running inside had its moments. The Bucs ability to bring the eye candy and utilize the star players on offense was a massive breath of fresh air.

Chris Godwin finishing with 8 catches for 81 yards and a TD, Mike Evans with 5 catches for 64 and 2 TDs and Jalen McMillan with his first TD catch (could’ve been 2 on the day) all while Baker was able to see what the defense was bringing and having the answers at the line to counter what the defense was showing will allow for the offense to score at will. Only having to punt one time last week, I think we can see Liam Coen build off that performance as new OC and really mix things up in the Bucs favor.
