Will Baker Mayfield Break Brady’s 43 Passing Touchdown Record?

Tampa Bay's QB started hot and has record-breaking potential in 2024
Transcript

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had their woes at the quarterback position over the years. But in recent memory, the team has had a high-firing offense, even dating back to Jameis Winston’s days as a Buccaneer.

When Tom Brady arrived in 2020, the level of play reached an all-time high in franchise history. Not only did he win the Super Bowl, but Brady broke the team’s single-season passing TD record with 43 in 2021.

Although Brady is the greatest QB of all-time, the duo of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans continue to prove they are one of the best 1-2 punches from the receiver position in NFL history. Putting up monster numbers as an NFL quarterback most definitely requires a great signal caller, but having all-time talent surrounded around your QB surely plays a part in their success.

When current Bucs’ QB Baker Mayfield was signed onto the roster, his starting spot wasn’t even solidified until the end of training camp. But as the season progressed in 2023, Mayfield and the entire Tampa Bay offense went through their gelling process and the results started flowing in.

Mayfield ended his first season as the Bucs starting QB with 4,043 yards and 28 touchdowns. It was an impressive season for a guy who had plenty of uncertainty heading into the year. His connection with both Evans and Godwin was apparent as they both grabbed a thousand-yard season.

As the 2024 season progresses, this Tampa Bay offense continues to fire on all cylinders.  Mayfield leads the NFL in passing touchdowns with fifteen, has 1,489 passing yards, a 109.4 passer rating and a 70.9% passer rating. He’s put up these numbers, all while willing his team to a 4-2 record, including some impressive wins.

With wins against tough opponents in the Commanders, Lions and Eagles, all signs point as if this offensive success will continue throughout this season. But can these explosive numbers from Mayfield and this offense continue enough to surpass Brady’s 43 TD record?

At the current pace he’s going, Mayfield would tie Brady’s record at 43. Baker has come through with two four-touchdown games this season, but has had a couple games where he’s only thrown one touchdown as well.

My belief is that Mayfield absolutely can overcome the record and with new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, it will be a goal of theirs if it becomes clear the record is attainable. With Evans and Godwin being the focal points of this offense, their success will determine the outcome for Mayfield.

Although, as the running game continues to evolve into something better than we expected, this team may lean towards a more ground-heavy approach than we’ve seen so far in 2024. We should see more carries from Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker, but these are also guys who can catch passes out of the backfield and help Mayfield get closer to the record, like we saw Tucker do in week six.

So as Tampa Bay enters a stretch where they’ll face top teams in Baltimore, Atlanta and San Francisco, it will soon become apparent if Mayfield can hit the magical #44. He’ll need to throw at least a few TDs through these upcoming games, but with two games against Carolina and another match up with the Saints, who just gave up four TD’s through the air, Baker and company will have all the opportunity to reach high, and break the GOAT’s record.
